President Berlusconi in hospital after an attack

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was struck by an object thrown by a man who was arrested immediately during a rally in Milan. The man’s called Massimo Tartaglia, 42 yo, was saved from being “lynched” by the crowd with a gash on his upper lip and blood on his face.
The premier was taken to hospital with a gash on his upper lip and blood on his face. He will spend 24 hours in Milan’s San Raffaele hospital under observation. The premier did not lose consciousness, he has a fractured tooth and a broken nose.
Berlusconi’s popularity has fallen to the lowest level since his election in April 2008 as sex scandals and corruption cases dominate the Italian news media. On Dec. 4, a mafia turncoat testified in a criminal case in Turin that Berlusconi negotiated with the criminal organization for political support in Sicily before his first election victory in 1994.
Berlusconi has said the accusations, dating back at least 15 years, are unfounded and can’t be verified.
Separately, two corruption trials against the premier have resumed in Milan. Berlusconi says judges and prosecutors are trying to bring down his government.
After the attack, Antonio Di Pietro, a former magistrate and leader of the opposition Italian Values party, said Berlusconi and his politics “instigate violence”, while President Giorgio Napolitano and most opposition politicians condemned the attack. Berlusconi’s spokesman attributed it to political tension.
